A new theory may cast further doubt over 'Shaken Baby Syndrome'
‘Shaken Baby syndrome’ is the term used when a baby or child is violently shaken, causing a recognised set of injuries including subdural haemorrhage, retinal damage and oxygen deficiency. It can cause life-long brain damage or death in the victims and many carers of young children have been convicted of this sort of abuse. However, Dr Irene Sheimberg, paediatric pathologist for the Barts and The London NHS Trust, has found that some of these conditions may occur naturally in babies. She talks about her findings with Jenni, and discusses the possible implications for those accused of shaking babies.
